To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the store name in 2010, the Mr Bricolage group has published a book telling the story of the oldest grouping of independent stores in France. A human tale.

The Association Nationale pour la Promotion du Faites vous-même (ANPF – the National Association of DIY promoters) created by 13 pioneers was officially born in 1965. The grouping was guided by Bernard Ivernel, a visionary who forecast the creation of a DIY distribution market. The ANPF rapidly established itself as the market leader. Step by step, the market gained a structure and members felt the need to strengthen their ranks against the competition. The grouping decided to use one single store name. In April 1980, assisted by the agency Publicis, around one hundred stores adopted the Mr Bricolage name. This book tells the details of the group’s history and all of the key dates for the group from the 1960s to 2010. Fun and uncluttered formatting includes parallel inserts on current news from dates in the past.

On 3 April 1980, almost 120 independent stores switched their signs to fly the Mr Bricolage store flag.

The Action Nationale des Promoteurs du Faites-le vous-même (ANPF) grouping, a word-for-word French translation forDo It Yourself national grouping, became the leading French DIY chain. The grouping was celebrating its 15 years of existence at that time.

While ANPF members had decided on their own store name, the launch was successfully organised by Publicis. This project was directly managed by Maurice Lévy and supervised by Marcel Bleustein-Blanchet, founder of Publicis.

The landscape of French DIY distribution rapidly changed from this point. Many independent stores constantly joined the Mr.Bricolage store, now the group with the same name.

The Mr.Bricolage group is still the leading group of independent DIY stores in France, and currently includes almost 850 stores under the Mr.Bricolage, Catena, Les Briconautes and Les Jardinautes store names and partner stores. The group boasted almost 2.1 thousand million euros in turnover in 2009 and more than 50 international stores in 10 countries.

Official signing of the transfer agreement between the Mr.Bricolage group and Les Briconautes

The transfer agreement for Le Club group, operating Les Briconautes stores, was recently officially signed.

The scope of the transfer includes the referencing agency Le Club, 14 Integrated Stores operating under the Les Briconautes store name and the property on eight of these sites.

The Competition authority had approved the planned acquisition a few days beforehand.

This acquisition was integrated in the consolidated accounts of Mr.Bricolage SA from 1 October 2009.

This event makes the Mr.Bricolage group the 3rd actor specialised in DIY distribution in France and the leading group of independent operators in the sector. Consolidated turnover generated by sales was equal to approximately 2.2 thousand million euros at end-2009. This represents a market share estimated at 12.4%.

The Mr.Bricolage group has acquired the Le Club pool and its Briconautes and Jardinautes stores, taking up position as number 3 on the French DIY market. This acquisition also positions the group as number 1 on the independent group hit list.

The group can now boast almost 700 stores including 178 Briconautes and Jardinautes stores, plus the 200 partner sales outlets in the Le Club pool.

Overall market share is estimated as 12.4% with 2.2 thousand million in turnover (source: Unibal 2008).
